Abstract: Staphylococcal pyodermas are one of the most common skin infections caused by various species of staphylococci. Fusidic acid is known to be very effective against these infections. Though it is available on the market as a cream formulation, an attempt has been made to develop a better formulation with respect to drug permeation characteristics as compared to the marketed cream formulation. In the present investigation, various cream formulations of fusidic acid were formulated, evaluated and the cream with promising characteristics was compared with the marketed formulation (Fucidin). The optimized cream formulation prepared by phase inversion technique was found to be superior in drug permeation characteristics (about 89% cumulative drug release) as compared to that of the marketed formulation (about 79% cumulative drug release). The optimized formulation did not show any skin irritation potency. Its commercialization depends, however, on the cream's clinical efficacy and safety, which are due to be performed.
