Abstract:
Pharmaceutical exports to surpass domestic sales by 2012
Indian pharmaceutical market, Valued at USD 8.16 billion in 2006-07 grew at a CAGR of 12.36% since last five years, where as exports grew at a higher CAGR of 20% to reach USD 6.15 billion in 2006-07. While the domestic market is expected to scale up to USD 14.5 billion by 2011-12 at a CAGR of 16%, exports are projected to jump much faster at 35% and reach USD 25billion by the same time, contributing over 63% of the total production, up from 43% in 2006-07.
Generics API to grow faster globally
Global demand for API in 2005 was USD 76 billion, 59% of which was captive APIs, balance being merchant APIs. Innovative API contributes 56% of the value and the balance being generics APIs valued at USD 13.5 billion. However, due to proliferation of generics, global demand for generics is expected to grow faster at a CAGR of 11% by 2010 compared to overall growth of 8.2% of merchant API.
Indian API industry to over take Italy by 2010
Indian bulk drugs and API industry doubled in the last 5 years to reach USD 4.1 billion during 2006-07. Exports of API's grew much faster to reach USD 2.65 billion during2006-07 contributing 65% of production, which is expected to increase to 75% by 2010. Currently India is in the third position in merchant API's globally, after Italy and China but is likely to replace Italy to occupy the second position by 2010 as per a study conducted by Chemical Pharmaceutical Generic Association. |
