Shilajit: An Amazing Rejuvenator and Anti-Aging Drug

Abstract: In Sanskrit the literal meaning of Shilajit is “Rock Like” - the power to make our body like a rock, it has unmatched powers of arresting and reversing the aging process. In Ayurveda, Shilajit is one of most potent and unique rejuvenators and conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness. Shilajit has been used historically for general physical strengthening, anti-aging, blood sugar stabilization, libido, injury healing, urinary tract rejuvenation, enhanced brain functioning potency, bone healing, kidney rejuvenation, immune system strengthening, arthritis, hypertension, obesity and many other application for numerous conditions. Shilajit is a part of famous ayurvedic medicines like chandraprabha vati, arogya vardhani vati and most important of all chyawanprash. It also acts as a powerful antioxidant thereby delaying aging process.

Introduction

In India, Shilajit is considered as nectar or amrit of God given to mankind to live life youthfully and become immortal forever. This resin is soft in texture, slimy to touch, pure and heavy. Other names by which Shilajit are famous is asphaltum, mineral pitch and girij. Shilajit is the most important drug of ayurvedic and folk-medicine systems in India. Ayurvedic doctors use it to strengthen immunity and cleanse the blood, noting that it benefits the liver and kidneys, our two most important blood-filtering organs. They use it to treat diabetes, anemia, aging, bronchitis, skin diseases, acne and boils, liver diseases, constipation, dyspepsia, allergies, fatigue, cancer, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic action and all urinary diseases. It also speeds wound healing. It is the first treatment given to people suffering from kidney failure and various chronic nerve diseases.

In the raw form it is a bituminous substance, which is a compact mass of vegetable organic matter composed of dark red gummy matrix. It is bitter in taste and its smell resembles cow's stale urine. The botanical name of Shilajit is Asphaltum (mineral pitch).

Shilajit is an end product of plant matter that has decomposed centuries ago and got dumped in mountains and due to pressure, got preserved in mountains. Shilajit is a blackish-brown exudation, from steep rocks of different formations, commonly found in the Himalayas, at altitudes between 1000-5000 m, from Arunachal Pradesh in the East to Kashmir in the West. It is also found in other countries, e.g. Afghanistan (Hindukush), Bhutan, China, Nepal, Pakistan, Tibet (Himalayan belt) and the USSR (TienShan, Ural). Shilajit is believed to arrest aging and produce rejuvenation.
