Disease Management and Patient Assistance Programs: Indian Scenario

Alok Sengupta, Aditya Purohit

Abstract
Pharmaceutical companies and also hospitals have initiated novel programs directed towards patients that essentially have a positive impact on quality of life and makes treatment affordable for therapy areas like cancer. These programs operate on innovative models where the key stakeholders include the pharmaceutical company, a “third-party” administrator, the clinician, and patients. The programs are known as Patient Assistance Programs (PAP) and Disease Management Programs (DMP), PAP provides a differential costing approach while deciding on the total treatment cost a patient has to bear. This program subsidizes the drug cost over the complete treatment regimen to the patients. Companies which have rolled out PAP in India are Novartis, Dr. Reddy’s laboratories, etc. Disease Management Program are specifically designed to enhance the quality of life a patient has during treatment course, assist’s in facilitating treatment to patients, and also improves the compliance rate to drug therapy. DMP has been successfully rolled out by Pfizer, GSK, and Asian Heart Institute. Both the programs are designed to help treatment outcomes in countries having a low per capita income. For a country like India the key challenge lies in vast geography, population and diversity. So, many of these programs are limited to urban areas. The next step will be to expand the reach of such models to the “bottom-of-pyramid” population.
