Pharmacovigilance and its Impact on Healthcare System in India

Abstract
The use medicines to mitigate suffering due to diseases are as old as mankind. The medicine are capable of influencing health of human not only of its intended use but also but also in a unpleasant manner. Some of the effects are so latent; there effects are learnt after decade of use. Some of the effects are likely to appear in further generations for example diethyl stilbosterol. Hence it has become mandatory to keep vigilance over the long-term effects of the drug and identify the risks involved and alert health care system so that the magnitude of drug induced harm can be minimized. The discipline of pharmacovigilance was started fallowing the 1972 WHO technical report. It is a systematic way of documenting, the ADR world wide and reviewing the impact of drug use on human health in general. The main focus of pharmacovigilance is to ensure medicine safety in all clinical and community set-ups.
