Techniques and Development Strategies of Nitrofurantoin Formulations – A Review

Abstract
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is serious health problem affecting millions of people each year. Nitrofurantoin is a drug of choice for UTI. In recent years various formulations of Nitrofurantoin have been developed and investigated by many researchers. Especially, development of oral sustained release form of Nitrofurantoin has been an interested topic of research for a long period of time. Despite these numerous attempts and quantum of work, very few formulations have been successfully used for the treatment of UTI due to the fact that for majority of these developed formulations clinical supportive data regarding the efficacy is not always available, and furthermore, their claims rely only on in-vitro data. The main objective of this review is to discuss the different technologies used in recent years to design Nitrofurantoin release delivery systems and the problems encountered with such formulations with possible suggestions/views for the improvement of Nitrofurantoin formulations.
