Safe and Effective Medicines for All–Challenges Before Indian Pharmacists

Dr. R. S. Thakur

Introduction: World Pharmacists Day 2019 has been celebrated across the world on 25th September, 2019. The theme for this year is "Safe and effective medicines for all”. The objective of “Safe and effective medicines for all” is the gate way to achieve the 1978 Alma-Ata declaration-“Health for all”. The theme is most appropriate in context of therapeutic outcome of every therapeutic regimen. Choice of the theme underlines the crucial role of ‘medicines’ in therapeutics, and importance of Pharmacist who dispenses the prescriptions of registered medical practitioners and makes available the medicines. Emphasis in this theme encompasses all aspects of medicines right from manufacture, preparation, quality control, storage, preservation, dispensing, distribution, administration, quality assurance, clinical evaluation and therapeutic drug monitoring. Health is an essential driver of development, security and peace. Healthy person performs better; healthy mind thinks constructive and is most efficient. In the plod to restore health, safe and effective medicines have prime role. Ever since the elixir sulfanilamide disaster of 1937 public outcry for safe and effective medicines became odyssey that is yet continuing.

The lofty objective of safe and effective medicines for all can be achieved only if WHO document “The Role of the Pharmacist in the Health Care System” is faithfully implemented in letter and spirit, and access to medicines only through Pharmacist is religiously assured. Fatefully, the Indian Scenario is dismally disappointing because, in spite of Hon’ble Supreme Court’s judgment as back as in 1997, hardly 10% of the Community Pharmacy set ups provide professional services of Pharmacists, which are mostly confined to the branded Chain Pharmacies and Pharmacist owned premises.
