A
number of private institution running pharmacy courses
such as D.Pharm. and B.Pharm. have recently been
sanctioned to run M.Pharm. courses in different
disciplines. Some of the sanctioned institutions which
are running M.Pharm. degree course, do not have adequate
infrastructure facility to run efficiently B.Pharm.
degree course. The liberal sanction, ostensibly granted
is to meet the overall deficiency of teaching faculty in
private pharmacy institution. That issue apart, I wish
to attract the attention of pharmaceutical educationists
on a different facet of postgraduate educational
programme in pharmacy.
The private pharmacy institutions are invariably
affiliated to the respective Technical University of
each state. The academic programme generally prescribed
is of four semesters (2 years) duration. The first two
semesters are devoted to teaching of theory papers
(four) and conduct of practicals. The last two semesters
(III and IV) are devoted to conduct a research programme.
Each of the students of III Semester is given a research
project by the allotted guide to carry out scientific
investigation on an allocated research project for one
year. Research is a fascinating term the real measuring
of which is understood neither by the students nor by
the so-appointed research guides. Unfortunately, there
has been overemphasis on the research activity to be
conducted in pharmacy institutions by the peer
educationists, at the detriment of good and effective
teaching. The outcome of the conduct of research in
pharmacy institution has been evaluated and commented
upon in a very poor light. However, the obsession
exists.
