A Strategic Report on The
Barriers and Technologies Employed to Combat Counterfeit
Medicines Globally

Introduction: Tracking and tracing of a
pharmaceutical product is a key element in solving the
problem of counterfeit medicines. Growth of
international free market and inadequate drug regulation
has led to the expansion of market in counterfeit drugs
worldwide. Technological protection is seen to be the
best way to avoid this problem. The implementation of
anti-counterfeit technologies is an important strategy
taken up by several drug manufacturers and regulatory
authorities. Different technologies came into existence
like overt, covert, and track and trace technologies.
Developed countries like USA have implemented RFID while
the European market is towards 2D barcodes. The track
and trace system and sterilization are given importance
and are widely used among all anti-counterfeit
technologies in different countries. Counterfeit drugs
may lead to death in several cases such as heart attack,
epilepsy, angina pectoris, in such condition
anti-counterfeit drugs acts as weapon to avoid injury.
Many methods have been developed till date to combat the
problem.
