Understanding Over The
Counter Medication System of the United States of
America

Introduction: Right to self medication has
brought a rationality to categorize drug products into
non-prescription or over the counter (OTC) medication.
If the drug product is found and proved to be safe and
efficacious, and if the patient is able to diagnose
his/her certain basic ailments and self medicate and
assess the cure, there is a likely to convert to OTC for
certain indications. The current article reviews the
back ground, policies, procedures and administration
relating to over the counter medication in the US. There
is a clear indication that Government of India is also
coming up with a new schedule for list of over the
counter medication in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
